Last night I was out for a walk with a friend in one of my favorite areas of the city scattered with some of the most beautiful homes I’ve ever seen. I like to go on a walk every once in a while and imagine that I am one of “those” people with their perfect homes. As I walked with my friend and we discussed the pros and cons of each house a wave of negativity passed through when he looked at me and said “This is just so disappointing, I wish I had one of these places.” I told him that I had full confidence that he would have his beautiful home on the river at some point. He replied “I know but I want it NOW”. I also want my house overlooking the river (or lake) but maybe getting to that point is half the fun. I’m pretty sure that once I have all the things I “think” I want now there will probably be another list just as long if not longer. When is enough, enough? When do you just forget about all those goals and realize that what you have right here right now is enough and that you have arrived….you are there?
In a time where people are constantly consuming and always striving to be better than their neighbour it is hard to slow down and just enjoy the ride. Enjoy the time it takes to actually not live pay check to pay check, or maybe the first time you were able to pay off your credit card…or max it out and not feel guilty at all because you know that you are going to be able to pay that sucker off.
There are plenty of other things that I think we/I just don’t slow down to enjoy enough of, like finishing University/college or even high school for that matter, getting your first job, or buying your first home (even if it’s not the house on the river). How about things that are even smaller, like the first time you understand what the heck all those people in the suits are talking about at a new job, maybe the time you get to say a really big word that you have been keeping in your head for the first time like “well now isn’t that just serendipitous”, or when the Barista at Starbucks finally knows your order so you don’t even have to say anything except for thanks…of course.
Wow, there really are a lot of things that happen every day that need to be looked at. Maybe it’s not all about getting there first….maybe it’s about getting there, wherever there is, while experiencing all the journey has to offer along the way.
